I counted every step it took me to get home,
One foot after the other.

Now to become what I am.”

Elegy Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed by Jared Pelletier (2017)

Narrated by: Christopher Plummer

“A short film based on the setting and gameplay of Hinterland’s exploration-survival experience, “The Long Dark”, by Hinterland Studio Inc.

To illustrate this vision for how THE LONG DARK will make the transition to live-action, Hinterland has produced a five-minute short film, Elegy, directed by Jared Pelletier, performed by Oscar-winning actor Christopher Plummer, and written by van Lierop.

“I describe Elegy as a visual poem”, says van Lierop, who also executive produced the short. “Jared’s passion for the source material is evident — he really connected with THE LONG DARK’s artistic sensibilities, and the game’s unique sense of identity within its own fiction. I think Elegy stands as an example of the level of quality and the overall tone I’d like to deliver in THE LONG DARK film.”

“In The Shadow Of The Mountain”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film In Wales Directed By Ben Cox (2017)

“This conceptual film explores the decline of rural agricultural communities in North Wales. The area of Snowdonia has seen a sharp reduction in the number of people working the land over the last 50 years as international competition, rural urban migration and the harsh conditions of North Wales’ countryside have made farming less attractive for new generations.

Featuring the work of Welsh poet, R. S. Thomas, this film champions the work of the National Trust and Wales YFC. Each year, their Llyndy Isaf Scholarship gives a young farmer the opportunity to manage the Llyndy Isaf Estate in the heart of Snowdonia, encouraging the transference of knowledge, the protection of the local environment and the conservation of an integral part of the Welsh heritage.

Produced by The Progress Film Company, Lost But Not Forgotten shines light on a host of unique and compelling stories that share the common themes of memory, time and loss.”

“The Welsh Hill Country” by R. S. Thomas

Too far for you to see
The fluke and the foot-rot and the fat maggot
Gnawing the skin from the small bones,
The sheep are grazing at Bwlch-y-Fedwen,
Arranged romantically in the usual manner
On a bleak background of bald stone.

Too far for you to see
The moss and the mould on the cold chimneys,
The nettles growing through the cracked doors,
The houses stand empty at Nant-yr-Eira,
There are holes in the roofs that are thatched with sunlight,
And the fields are reverting to the bare moor.

Too far, too far to see
The set of his eyes and the slow pthisis
Wasting his frame under the ripped coat,
There’s a man still farming at Ty’n-y-Fawnog,
Contributing grimly to the accepted pattern,
The embryo music dead in his throat.

“My Country” by Dorothea Mackellar

The love of field and coppice
Of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft, dim skies
I know, but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

The stark white ring-barked forests,
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops,
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us
We see the cattle die
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze …

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand
though Earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

“Lost But Not Forgotten-Forgotten Coast”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film Series Directed By Matthew Green (2017)

“A poetic exploration of the Isle of Wight’s South West coastline, where coastal erosion and constant landslips have left abandoned towns and decaying holiday villages. Once home to Alfred Lord Tennyson, his poem ‘Nothing Will Die’ serves to highlight the never-ending cycle of death and rebirth along the coast.

This is the first film in our Lost But Not Forgotten series. Across Europe lies a multitude of hidden spaces, remote landscapes and mysterious figures that have, for years, remained unknown. Wearied by time, their stories have gone untold, until now.

Produced by The Progress Film Company, Lost But Not Forgotten shines light on a host of unique and compelling stories that share the common themes of memory, time and loss.”

“Nothing Will Die” by Alfred Lord Tennyson

When will the stream be aweary of flowing
Under my eye?
When will the wind be aweary of blowing
Over the sky?
When will the clouds be aweary of fleeting?
When will the heart be aweary of beating?
And nature die?
Never, oh! never, nothing will die;
The stream flows,
The wind blows,
The cloud fleets,
The heart beats,
Nothing will die.

Nothing will die;
All things will change
Thro’ eternity.
‘Tis the world’s winter;
Autumn and summer
Are gone long ago;
Earth is dry to the centre,
But spring, a new comer,
A spring rich and strange,
Shall make the winds blow
Round and round,
Thro’ and thro’,
Here and there,
Till the air
And the ground
Shall be fill’d with life anew.

The world was never made;
It will change, but it will not fade.
So let the wind range;
For even and morn
Ever will be
Thro’ eternity.
Nothing was born;
Nothing will die;
All things will change.

“The Clouded Morning” by Jones Very

The morning comes, and thickening clouds prevail,
    Hanging like curtains all the horizon round,
Or overhead in heavy stillness sail;
    So still is day, it seems like night profound;
Scarce by the city’s din the air is stirred,
    And dull and deadened comes its every sound;
The cock’s shrill, piercing voice subdued is heard,
    By the thick folds of muffling vapors drowned.
Dissolved in mists the hills and trees appear,
    Their outlines lost and blended with the sky;
And well-known objects, that to all are near,
    No longer seem familiar to the eye,
But with fantastic forms they mock the sight,
As when we grope amid the gloom of night.

“A cinematic video showing our epic journey on the Iceland ring road.

iceland-heres-to-the-travelers-cinematic-poem-travel-short-film-directed-by-tobi-schnorpfeil-2016

Iceland has always been one of my dream destinations! Its rugged terrain, massive waterfalls and arctic flair have always been famous for being highly photogenic. There is something wild about this island and I tried to capture it in this film. Together with some friends we rented cars and planned to make the ring road in about 2 weeks which is not a lot of time. A major highlight of the trip was being able to see some intense polar lights!”
