The Light At The Start Of Everything Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed by Kim Geldenhuys (2019)

“I hope you travel well,
 I hope you ride the wave
 From the center.
 And the light says:
 You know the start
 But not the end.
 All our ends are different.”

“Kim Geldenhuys was approached to shoot with TBWA Hunt Lascaris for The Okavango Diamond Company. The script: ‘The Light at the Start of Everything’ is a visual poem written by Iain Thomas for The Okavango Blue, the remarkably rare and largest Deep Blue diamond that has ever gone to market. Kim was tasked with a brief to explore the stone’s origin and the magical, unspoilt land of Botswana to which it belongs.

The Light At The Start Of Everything Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed by Kim Geldenhuys (2019)

To reflect on the transient nature of our human lives and remind us that the light inside the diamond is the same light that resides in us. Kim and a small team headed to Botswana to find ways to film its natural beauty in a way not seen before. The shoot saw a travel to the Makgadigadi Pans and the inaccessible but unique Khubu Island and beyond. A partnership with Wicked Pixels seamlessly integrated the post production elements. An accompanying sound track is scored by Nic van Reenen of Field Audio.”

“I had the privilage of being Lead Animator on this film, at Nexus Studios. Was great to work with the whole team once again!

I animated the car section at the beginning until the guitar handover, and the final dragon sequence, and a bunch other stuff in between, and generally oversee the 2D animation. I also did the storyboard/animatic/layout process and worked out the 2d camera moves. Its always great to work with Smith and Foulkes because they like to see what the animators and designers come up with, so they give us a lot of freedom to put our own creativity into their projects.”  Bishoy Gendi

“Roll The Dice” by Charles Bukowski

roll the dice

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don’t even start.

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.

go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.

if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.

do it, do it, do it.
do it.

all the way
all the way.

you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter, its
the only good fight
there is.

Connemara Illuminated A Cinematic Poem Short Film Promo Directed By Luke Morgan (2019)

“Connemara Illuminated” by Christine Valters Paintner

A poem is being scribed this morning
across the thick brown bog and
over the gashed granite folds of mountain,
written in spires of gold descending
from the wide bowl of sky
across the breathing heather.

You have to pause to read it,
long enough to hear beneath the relentless
moan of wind
where centuries of voices have whispered
their seeking, feasting, fasting, loving.

You know your singular aloneness
and your place in a communion of stone and sea.

Even as the kestrel’s wings vibrate into the night
sending quills into the damp air,
even as the skylarks and stonechats
attend each day’s awakening
like eager midwives,
this empire of longing writes its script
in fox tracks and memory.

If your life could be just a fraction of this poem
you would never need to utter another word.

“To Autumn” by John Keats

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
   Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
   With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
   And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
      To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
   With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
      For summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
   Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
   Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
   Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
      Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
   Steady thy laden head across a brook;
   Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
      Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
Where are the songs of spring? Ay, Where are they?
   Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
   And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
   Among the river sallows, borne aloft
      Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
   Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
   The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft
      And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

“Fire, water, earth, air and LOVE… the fifth etheric element.
It’s a story inspired by the poem “Tonight I Can Write The Saddest Lines” of Pablo Neruda.

Filmed on PIANOSA Island, Italy.

“Tonight I Can Write The Saddest Lines” by Pablo Neruda

Write, for example,’The night is shattered
and the blue stars shiver in the distance.’

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me sometimes, and I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is shattered and she is not with me.

This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.
My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight searches for her as though to go to her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that’s certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another’s. She will be another’s. Like my kisses before.
Her voide. Her bright body. Her inifinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that’s certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms
my sould is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.

Excerpts from “We’ve Come A Long Way” by Paula Matthew

A new day dawns
So walk the course
You Know the spot
Line up the shot
Drive through dark hedges
Into the light.

Sunrise where giants make their home
And castles half-fallen into the sea
Emerge again in technicolor
For the whole world.

Past the home place for the laureates
Picking blackberries, pealing spots.
Digging deep into our culture
And the cracks great.

“Travel magazine Wideoyster presents a poetry film about New York. Ode To New York by Walt Whitman. A poetry video we made for travel magazine WideOyster.
The poem Give Me The Splendid Silent Sun was published in 1865, but Whitmans sharp-witted observations of the city are, perhaps, even more relevant today than when the poem was written.

Walt loved New York. Even though at the time it was a tough city to live in. He felt energized instead of overwhelmed by its constant motion, heard music instead of madness, and saw humanity instead of strangeness in its crowds.”

Ode To New York City Cinematic Poem Short Film Featuring Walt Whitman Directed By Alessio Cuomo 2018

“GIVE ME THE SPLENDID SILENT SUN” by Walt Whitman
GIVE me the splendid silent sun, with all his beams full-
dazzling;
Give me juicy autumnal fruit, ripe and red from the
orchard;
Give me a field where the unmow’d grass grows;
Give me an arbor, give me the trellis’d grape;
Give me fresh corn and wheat—give me serene-moving
animals, teaching content;
Give me nights perfectly quiet, as on high plateaus west
of the Mississippi, and I looking up at the stars;
Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers,
where I can walk undisturb’d;
Give me for marriage a sweet-breath’d woman, of whom
I should never tire;
Give me a perfect child—give me, away, aside from the
noise of the world, a rural domestic life;
Give me to warble spontaneous songs, reliev’d, recluse
by myself, for my own ears only;
Give me solitude—give me Nature—give me again,
O Nature, your primal sanities!
—These, demanding to have them, (tired with ceaseless
excitement, and rack’d by the war-strife;)
These to procure, incessantly asking, rising in cries from
my heart,
While yet incessantly asking, still I adhere to my city;
Day upon day, and year upon year, O city, walking
your streets,
Where you hold me enchain’d a certain time, refusing
to give me up;
Yet giving to make me glutted, enrich’d of soul—you
give me forever faces;
