“A self-reflection on the dismality and duality of searching for gold and skiing in Alaska. Some of the highest highs and lowest lows, one doesn’t always strike gold.

A film by Aiden Ulrich, Produced by Eric Sales, Executive Producers Annelise Loevlie, and Ben Anderson, Design by Sam Winship, Sound Mixing by Jacob Callaghan, Second Camera Yancy Caldwell, Spencer Cordovano, Skiing by Whit Boucher, Scotty Vermerris, and Owen Leeper.

“Spell of Alaska” The first second film of the Return to Nature series from Icelantic Skis.”

“The Spell of the Yukon” by Robert W. Service (1874-1958)

I wanted the gold, and I sought it;
   I scrabbled and mucked like a slave.
Was it famine or scurvy—I fought it;
   I hurled my youth into a grave.
I wanted the gold, and I got it—
   Came out with a fortune last fall,—
Yet somehow life’s not what I thought it,
   And somehow the gold isn’t all.
No! There’s the land. (Have you seen it?)
   It’s the cussedest land that I know,
From the big, dizzy mountains that screen it
   To the deep, deathlike valleys below.
Some say God was tired when He made it;
   Some say it’s a fine land to shun;
Maybe; but there’s some as would trade it
   For no land on earth—and I’m one.
You come to get rich (damned good reason);
   You feel like an exile at first;
You hate it like hell for a season,
   And then you are worse than the worst.
It grips you like some kinds of sinning;
   It twists you from foe to a friend;
It seems it’s been since the beginning;
   It seems it will be to the end.
I’ve stood in some mighty-mouthed hollow
   That’s plumb-full of hush to the brim;
I’ve watched the big, husky sun wallow
   In crimson and gold, and grow dim,
Till the moon set the pearly peaks gleaming,
   And the stars tumbled out, neck and crop;
And I’ve thought that I surely was dreaming,
   With the peace o’ the world piled on top.
The summer—no sweeter was ever;
   The sunshiny woods all athrill;
The grayling aleap in the river,
   The bighorn asleep on the hill.
The strong life that never knows harness;
   The wilds where the caribou call;
The freshness, the freedom, the farness—
   O God! how I’m stuck on it all.
The winter! the brightness that blinds you,
   The white land locked tight as a drum,
The cold fear that follows and finds you,
   The silence that bludgeons you dumb.
The snows that are older than history,
   The woods where the weird shadows slant;
The stillness, the moonlight, the mystery,
   I’ve bade ’em good-by—but I can’t.
There’s a land where the mountains are nameless,
   And the rivers all run God knows where;
There are lives that are erring and aimless,
   And deaths that just hang by a hair;
There are hardships that nobody reckons;
   There are valleys unpeopled and still;
There’s a land—oh, it beckons and beckons,
   And I want to go back—and I will.
They’re making my money diminish;
   I’m sick of the taste of champagne.
Thank God! when I’m skinned to a finish
   I’ll pike to the Yukon again.
I’ll fight—and you bet it’s no sham-fight;
   It’s hell!—but I’ve been there before;
And it’s better than this by a damsite—
   So me for the Yukon once more.
There’s gold, and it’s haunting and haunting;
   It’s luring me on as of old;
Yet it isn’t the gold that I’m wanting
   So much as just finding the gold.
It’s the great, big, broad land ’way up yonder,
   It’s the forests where silence has lease;
It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
   It’s the stillness that fills me with peace.

5Point Adventure Film Festival 2018 Cinematic Poem Short Film Trailer

Narrated by: Michael Kennedy

“The annual 5Point Film Festival trailer reminds us to reach for our highest ideals and live our best adventure. This year is no different.

In 2007, Julie Kennedy founded the 5Point Film Festival. In 2012, her husband Michael Kennedy, one of America’s most legendary alpinists wrote an open ‘Letter to My [his] Son’ that was published in The Alpinist Magazine. They were poignant and heartfelt words from a father to his son discussing life, passion and direction. After losing their son this year, it seemed like an appropriate homage to revisit and repurpose these words for the larger community. The letter reminds us to live our own individual adventures, passions, lives and to always try our best to reach for the highest ideals and embody the 5points: purpose, respect, commitment, humility, balance.”

Excerpts from “Letter To My Son” by Michael Kennedy

“How can I express all the thoughts and emotions that swirl in my head, Hayden, when you are halfway around the world on a big route? I remember my own days up high, the feeling of lightness as the earth drops away, the moments of pure grace when nothing matters except the next move—setting a foot just so, feeling the solid thunk of an axe, the calmness of my heart and mind. Everything I needed was right before me.

I know that’s what you’re searching for, but it’s not always what you get. For I also recall the deafening fatigue of climbing too many hours without stopping, the dry throat and the aching belly, the paralyzing fear of a long runout. The bad anchors. The close calls with storms, rockfall and avalanches. The anxiety of being days away from safety, wondering whether the next pitch will go, searching for a bivy site or just a place to sit for a few hours, knowing that the only way out is over the summit and down an unfamiliar ridge.

You’ve gotten all that and more since you left home.”

without exception is performing the same show.”

“The aim of Around a Vision is to observe places, people,
stories that question our certainties. We want to tell the
journey of five athletes that look for a different, holy,
almost primitive vision in the Asiatic land. Together with
their sporting, distorted vision of the city that is for
them a real playground they ll be able to reach their purpose.
Brace yourself, you re about to see Italy, India and Myanmar
lived between experiences at the limit of humanity, mystical
acquaintances and athletic evolutions.”

“Two roads diverged in a wood … I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” Robert Frost

“My aim was to capture the nature and turquoise as the way it was, but from a different perspective, making tourism film far from what has been done before. Feeling the heaviness of the responsibility to make a film for my home country, which the previous one has been made 9 years ago, I have tried to fulfill my vision and dreams for this land, in the surveillance of two big brands, Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism & Turkish Airlines as a client. After months of work, this creation has fly from home to be seen in 45 different countries in all medias.”

Street Sweeper Cinematic Poem Short Film in Barcelona Spain Directed by Rupert Walker

“Street Sweeper” (from “The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life”)

by Martin Luther King Jr.

“What I’m saying to you this morning, my friends, even if it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go on out and sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures; sweep streets like Handel and Beethoven composed music; sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry; (Go ahead) sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, “Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.”

If you can’t be a pine on the top of a hill

Be a scrub in the valley—but be

The best little scrub on the side of the hill,

Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.

If you can’t be a highway just be a trail

If you can’t be the sun be a star;

It isn’t by size that you win or fail—

Be the best of whatever you are.

And when you do this, when you do this, you’ve mastered the length of life.”
