The Brú na Bóinne megalithic sites of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth take on a mystical aura at most times of the year. The scorched summer landscape of 2018 proved no exception as the monuments appeared more reminiscent of their distant past, when the climate of Ireland was warmer and drier.

Song Of Amergin A Cinematic Poem Short Film In Ireland Directed By Arnie Hensman (2019)

Midsummer night at Newgrange sees the setting sun in almost the exact opposite position to the famous winter solstice that lights up the chamber.

The Song of Amergin is considered to be the earliest spoken Irish poem. It is attributed to the Milesian druid and bard, Amergin Glúingel, who is said to have incanted the words over the Boyne Valley hundreds of years before Christianity during the Milesian arrival in Ireland.

This ‘Mystery’ chant, perhaps sums up the area’s mystique most appropriately. He concludes by asking, “Who shows the place where the sun sleeps?”. Recounted in the Leabhar Gabhála or Book of Invasions, it has a philosophical essence paralleling spiritual traditions most certainly unknown to the author. Amergin’s incantation has been interpreted by artists, presidents and world renowned musicians. While many mysteries of the Boyne Valley remain unknown, the words shed light on an ancient people’s quest to make sense of the ambiguities of nature.

The translation used is in keeping with the cadence of the original old irish, and the succinctness of the spoken verse.

I am wind on sea
I am ocean wave
I am roar of sea
I am the stag of seven battles
I am an eagle on the cliff
I am a tear of the sun
I am the fairest of plants
I am a wild boar in valour
I am a salmon in the pool
I am a lake in the plain
I am a hill of poetry
I am a word of knowledge
I am the head of the spear in battle
I am the God that puts fire in the head
Who shed light on uncut dolmen?
Who announces the ages of the moon?
Who shows the place where the sun sleeps?
If Not I

There is a place not accessible through downloads,
It’s instead revealed down winding country roads.
Where modernity’s false gospel and urban strife,
Are baptized by clear waters and gurgling life.

“It’s a strange thing, life
And an even stranger thing,
Is Time.
No living thing knows quite
How much we have.
Wondering and an innocence
Unaware when the clock
Will stop ticking.”

“Edge of the Sea” by Marlin Ray

Soft dust wraps us in its rough embrace,
sea salt air dense with water.
Sunrise sea change
embraces the blue
dirt gives from the earth
soft kelp sleeve
and urchin wrap.
crayfish covering
and grey waves.
For these I sing my song.
Seaweed circus
of youthful shouts
bottomless marine world
of chance and glee.
The quiet line of breaking ocean,
for these I sing my song.
Hills slide to the edge of the sea
always fitting perfectly.
Everywhere the colors shout and twist
making joy and rain.
for these we sing our song.

“Build Me A Cottage” by Fernando Pessoa

Build me a cottage deep
In a forest, a simple, silent home,
Like a breath in a sleep,
Where all wish may be never to roam
And a pleasure all smallness may keep.

        A palace high then build,
With confusion of lights and of rooms,
        A strange sense to yield,
Whither my desire from the cottage’s glooms
May go, to return, unfulfilled.

        Then dig me a grave,
That what cottage nor palace can give
        I at length may have,
That the weariness of all ways to live
May cease like the last of a wave.

“Horizonte” by Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935)

Oh ocean preceding us, your fears
Had coral and beaches and forests to them.
Were the night and fog unveiled,
The past’s storms and mystery,
The Afar would blossom, and the starlit South
Shine resplendent on the ship of initiation.

Austere line of the distant coast
Upon the ship’s approach, the slope of the land rises
In trees with nothing
Far about them;
Closer by, the earth opens up in sounds and colours

And upon landing there are birds and flowers
Where from afar there was only an abstract line.
The dream is to see the invisibile forms
Of imprecise distances, and, with sensitive
Movements of hope and will,
To seek out in the cold line of the horizon
The tree, the beach, the flower, the bird, the fountain
The much-deserved caresses of Truth.

Excerpt from “The Waves” by Boris Pasternak

We were in Georgia. You can get this land
If hell is multiplied by paradise,
Bare indigence by tenderness, and if
A hothouse serves as pedestal for ice.

And then you’ll know what subtle doses of
Success and labor, duty, mountain air
Make the right mixture with the earth and sky
For man to be the way we found him there.

“A few months ago, a friend and I went to discover Morocco for a personal project. It was an amazing experience for both of us, and some of the witnessed places were breathtaking. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be back sooner or later.

So, with some of the images that we recorded, I made this little tribute to Mr. Charles Bukowski and his poem ‘The Laughing Heart’. And, of course, to my colleague Izhan, who’s being a fellow companion these last couple of years. For more adventures like this!”

“The Laughing Heart” by Charles Bukowski

your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.

“Postscript” by Seamus Heaney

Some time make the time to drive out west
Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore,
In September or October, when the wind
And the light are working off each other
So that the ocean on one side is wild
With foam and glitter, and inland among stones
The surface of a slate-grey lake is lit
By the earthed lightening of flock of swans,
Their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white,
Their fully-grown headstrong-looking heads
Tucked or cresting or busy underwater.
Useless to think you’ll park or capture it
More thoroughly. You are neither here nor there,
A hurry through which known and strange things pass
As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways
And catch the heart off guard and blow it open.
