“Thoroughbred is a film about the isolating pursuit of perfection. The daily battle waged between ambition and anxiety.”

Thoroughbred Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed By Kurt Schneider (2019)

Here again, seated with a gnawing feeling of dissatisfaction.
The ache in my stomach, the push at my back, always constant.
Driven by that ambiguous spark.
I question its origin, its impetus.
Burning, my envy rages against those so easily satisfied.
To know that peace would be bliss.
Yet were it offered, I know I would decline.
For as much as I disdain its presence, I invite its consistency.
Always more, always next.
For now, that great fear, the gap between my accomplishments and its expectations, subsides for the day.
I’ve earned this calm, this freedom.
But it is fleeting.
For tomorrow, we start again.

“I had the privilage of being Lead Animator on this film, at Nexus Studios. Was great to work with the whole team once again!

I animated the car section at the beginning until the guitar handover, and the final dragon sequence, and a bunch other stuff in between, and generally oversee the 2D animation. I also did the storyboard/animatic/layout process and worked out the 2d camera moves. Its always great to work with Smith and Foulkes because they like to see what the animators and designers come up with, so they give us a lot of freedom to put our own creativity into their projects.”  Bishoy Gendi

“In Between Words”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film In New York City By Sheldon Chau (2018)

“In Between Worlds” is a Cinematic Poem Short Film In New York City Featuring Poet Lilian Mehrei Directed by Sheldon Chau.

Filmed, Edited and Directed by: Sheldon Chau

Music Composed by: John Corlis
Piano: John Corlis
Violin: Gustavo Eiriz
Actress: Achiaa Prempeh
Narrated by: Achiaa Prempeh

“A woman looks for her place in New York City as she contemplates the meaning of “home.”

The City Odes Project is a passion project in which my composer and I will collaborate with a poet and an actor to create a humanist, emotional, and visual story amidst the backdrop of a particularly city. “In Between Words” is the first of many to come, and kicks off this series in the city I currently reside in – New York City. The narrative was birthed out of an eagerness to collaborate with Achiaa, my actress, who now lives in New York and is originally from Ghana. In speaking with her, I decided to pursue a story about someone searching for home; a woman who is figuring out if NYC is the place for her, who is coming to terms that she is 5,000 miles away from her original home in West Africa, and thus easing out tensions with her mother, who of course wants her to return. The final result here features the work of Lilian Mehrel – a fellow filmmaker and classmate of mine back at NYU Grad Film school – who captures these feelings through her words, and my frequent collaborator John Corlis – an LA-based musician and composer – who complements the poetry with his mixture of piano and strings.”

“In Between Words” by Lilian Mehrei

Where am I?
Check the map. What’s a map, anyway?
An alphabet.
Spelling out spaces
In between words.

When you carve lines in a concrete jungle,
The dust particles remain. They stain
The people with grit
Glittering their teeth.

When I was little, my mother told me
My great-grandfather was the head of our tribe.
What’s a tribe? I asked.
He was like the king of our village, she told me.
Are you the queen now? I asked.

Yes Queen, says a handsome woman walking by.

Excuse me, do you know which way is north?
I squint up at the scrapers of the sky.
They look down at their fireflies.

My eyes blink for a rest. I need to go
I enter the arteries
To flow with bodies as one.
Noon or midnight, there is no time here.

I balance, suspended halfway
Between North and South.
There is no fullness,
There is no stillness.

I cross the street. I cross my heart.
I cross my mother, one too many times.
Why don’t you come home? She says.
What is home? I say.
There are too many people there, she says.
There’s nobody to bother me, I say.

When it’s too much
I slip in the small spaces.

Can you find me on a map?
Look, there – that eyelash that fell,
Between 6th and 7th avenue, that’s me.

Where are you? My mother calls me.
I’m on 6th and a half avenue, I say.

You don’t believe me?
Look on the map. It’s really there.

“Serenity” by Edward Rowland Sills

Be still,—be still!
Midnight’s arch is broken
In thy ceaseless ripples.
Dark and cold below them
Runs the troubled water,—
Only on its bosom,
Shimmering and trembling,
Doth the glinted star-shine
                  Sparkle and cease.

Be still,—be still!
Boundless truth is shattered
On thy hurrying current.
Rest, with face uplifted,
Calm, serenely quiet;
Drink the deathless beauty—
Thrills of love and wonder
Sinking, shining, star-like;
Till the mirrored heaven
Hollow down within thee
Holy deeps unfathomed,
Where far thoughts go floating,
And low voices wander
              Whispering peace.

“Paris Noir”: A Cinematic Time-Lapse Music Short Film Directed By Benjamin Trancart (2017)

“Paris Noir” is a Cinematic Time-Lapse Music Short Film Directed By Benjamin Trancart.

Filmed, Edited and Directed by: Benjamin Trancart

Music by: Juliette Gréco (“Paris Canaille”)

“By dint of searching, sometimes you’ll finally find… what you were not after.”

Philppe Lejeune

“Since past years, I often dreamt of shooting time lapses. This night again, I was on top of a slate metallic roof lit by the moon. Viewpoint was awesome, opening on the seaside with a red lighthouse sweeping the mist. I was licking the salt on my lips.
But in those dreams, i’m always late setting up my camera or i just forgot to charge my battery missing the occasion to capture this ephemeral moment.

Positive side of it is that during those dreams my brain has created fantastic images, unbelievable landscapes, volcanoes, and luxuriant forests. Some places that will never exist but that i’ll never forget. However i open my eyes and i still go and look for those places.

I’m aware that we have to live things and not look at them through the lens of a camera but harvest time is an incredible moment.

Maybe we’ll meet one night on a slate metallic roof messed around by a pale moonlight.”

“Never Forgotten”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film Featuring WWI A.E. Housman Poem Directed By Jamie Childs And Gareth Brannan (2016)

Music by:  Tom Player
Violin & Viola Solos: Johnathan Hill
Trumpet & Fugelhorn: Joe Morris

Poem Read by: Joe Blakemore

“Cinematic short film “Never Forgotten” commemorates the 100th anniversary of the First World War, and the young lives which were sacrificed.

Director Jamie Childs (Vera, Lucky Man) and Gareth Brannan (Director & VFX Supervisor at The Mill) tell the story of one ‘War Boy’s hopes and sorrows, on his last journey through no mans land, disappearing into the horizon alongside his brothers in arms.

The A. E. Housman poem “Soldier From The Wars Returning” is set to a moving cinematic score composed by Tom Player (Trailer music composer for The Hobbit, Game of Thrones) and our fallen gather in chorus to whistle the traditional WWI song, “Keep The Home Fires Burning”. The recording features the “Molitor Stradivarius” c.1697 played by Johnathan Hill.

Today more than ever we feel its important for people to stop and remember the huge sacrifices made during WWI, one hundred years ago. This respectful and thought provoking tribute reminds us how much we owe for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

“Soldiers From The Wars Returning” by A.E. Housman (1922)

Soldier from the wars returning,
Spoiler of the taken town,
Here is ease that asks not earning;
Turn you in and sit you down.

Peace is come and wars are over,
Welcome you and welcome all,
While the charger crops the clover
And his bridle hangs in stall.

Now no more of winters biting,
Filth in trench from tall to spring,
Summers full of sweat and fighting
For the Kesar or the King.

Rest you, charger, rust you, bridle;
Kings and kesars, keep your pay;
Soldier, sit you down and idle
At the inn of night for aye.
