“Notes Of An Insomniac” by Anna Peters

Are you here tonight Sleep?
I’ve been looking for you.

Are you here tonight Sleep?
When do you appear and where?
Are you broken, disturbed, or deep?
Are you a dream, or a nightmare?

I have envied for many weeks
Those lucky ones you come to.
You bring them all of your gifts,
You rock them, foster and comfort.

I witness you in the morning light,
Peeking through the curtains at my lover’s cheekbone.
I study you at 3am, 4, 4:05
As I’m staring blank at my phone.

Now I see you as I’m commuting from
…work. As my parents doze off watching movies.
As my sister is sneaking home
When the night wears off unnoticed.

You are oceans of warmth under sheets,
Quiet breath, weekend and no alarms.
You are where someone is giving a gentle squeeze
To a spouse sleeping in their arms.

You are wanted, desired, craved for.
Longing for you is in every new mother’s eyes,
You are here early on in the morning,
As a shift nurse boards the bus.

We, as humans, give you a sacred meaning,
Diving into our rituals before bed.
Some are focusing their gaze on the ceiling,
Ruminating and spiralling in their head.

After tube, train stations and pubs are closed,
World transforms into a silent void.
Insomniacs and their suffering goes, unnoticed,
Leaving them on their own – sleepless, tired, ignored.

It’s a quiet, stretched out, ongoing battle,
Counting minutes, hours, waiting for the alarm.
Getting up, pushing through on repeat, and then shortly after
Days are starting to melt into one.
