The Letter - You Will Not Have My Hatred Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed By Salomon Leightelm 2019

“I vividly remember the morning I read these powerful words for the first time. It was a cold November afternoon and a friend of mine had shared it on Instagram. As I was reading, I glanced over at my son playing in the living room – he was 17 months old, and I started coming undone. My wife looked over at me and I couldn’t speak, I just handed her the phone, and she also just came undone. These words had stuck with me for 4 years and they haven’t let go of me. How can a man, who had suffered so much, have a such a spirit of resilience and grace? Thank you Antoine Leiris for seeing the world unlike how most people see it – for showing a way that flows in the opposite direction of hate, and retaliation. Its words like yours that change the world. This film is a contemplative meditation on those words, be patient with it.”

I was recently commissioned by The New Yorker to direct, design, and animate a pilot series of three animated visual essays.

The first film features the great Leonard Cohen as he reflects on death and preparing for the end. The initial interview, by David Remnick, was recorded at Cohen’s home in Los Angeles a month before he passed away.

“The Prophecy – Iceland”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film By Henry Behel (2019)

Music: Sam Plotkin
Percussionists: Amin Malekpour, Sam Archer, Kris Wismer

I filmed this in four days while traveling around Iceland alone. The sun set at midnight and rose at 3am, but it never really got dark. I shot as much of the day as I could, stopping everywhere that caught my eye. I found places off the road and slept on a pad under the stars. I got rained on and blasted with wind, but I felt alive.

I have made a habit of traveling alone in wild places. I feel magic in the howling wind, the ice on my face, the sand in my shoes. My mind can drift back to the beginning of time or out to the stars where the earth is just a dot. I finally feel the connection and peace I so long for, and yet is so elusive in my daily life.

No place has inspired me like this more than Iceland. This film is how it feels to me. Beautiful and serene, but dark and violent as well. Time moves differently here. The land still exists in some ancient forgotten epoch, when earth was still lava rock soup.

“Where The Sun Is Born – Japan”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film Featuring Charles Baudelaire By L’oeil d’Eos (2019)

Filmed, Edited and Directed by: L’oeil d’Eos

Against tide and on the sidelines of the crowd, it’s a confidential Japan that we present to you in this video. Condensed from our two recent trips to the Land of the Rising Sun, this film is an ode to the connection to nature and urban harmony that characterize Japan so well.

The words of Charles Baudelaire respond to the images, or rather is it the opposite ?
There are atmospheres that you imagine more than others, and if someone had asked us the question earlier, it’s exactly with these images, these moments that we would have described Japan.

Where the sun is born, where effervescence becomes a sense of appeasement, where meditation and lifestyle become one.

“GET DRUNK” by Charles Baudelaire

ONE SHOULD always be drunk. That’s the great thing; the only question.
Not to feel the horrible burden of Time weighing on your shoulders and bowing you to the earth, you should be drunk without respite.

Drunk with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you please. But get drunk.

And if sometimes you should happen to awake, on the stairs of a palace, on the green grass of a ditch, in the dreary solitude of your own room, and find that your drunkenness is ebbing or has vanished, ask the wind and the wave, ask star, bird, or clock, ask everything that flies, everything that moans, everything that flows, everything that sings, everything that speaks, ask them the time; and the wind, the wave, the star, the bird and the clock will all reply: “It is Time to get drunk! If you are not to be the martyred slaves of Time, be perpetually drunk! With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you please.”

The Brú na Bóinne megalithic sites of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth take on a mystical aura at most times of the year. The scorched summer landscape of 2018 proved no exception as the monuments appeared more reminiscent of their distant past, when the climate of Ireland was warmer and drier.

Song Of Amergin A Cinematic Poem Short Film In Ireland Directed By Arnie Hensman (2019)

Midsummer night at Newgrange sees the setting sun in almost the exact opposite position to the famous winter solstice that lights up the chamber.

The Song of Amergin is considered to be the earliest spoken Irish poem. It is attributed to the Milesian druid and bard, Amergin Glúingel, who is said to have incanted the words over the Boyne Valley hundreds of years before Christianity during the Milesian arrival in Ireland.

This ‘Mystery’ chant, perhaps sums up the area’s mystique most appropriately. He concludes by asking, “Who shows the place where the sun sleeps?”. Recounted in the Leabhar Gabhála or Book of Invasions, it has a philosophical essence paralleling spiritual traditions most certainly unknown to the author. Amergin’s incantation has been interpreted by artists, presidents and world renowned musicians. While many mysteries of the Boyne Valley remain unknown, the words shed light on an ancient people’s quest to make sense of the ambiguities of nature.

The translation used is in keeping with the cadence of the original old irish, and the succinctness of the spoken verse.

I am wind on sea
I am ocean wave
I am roar of sea
I am the stag of seven battles
I am an eagle on the cliff
I am a tear of the sun
I am the fairest of plants
I am a wild boar in valour
I am a salmon in the pool
I am a lake in the plain
I am a hill of poetry
I am a word of knowledge
I am the head of the spear in battle
I am the God that puts fire in the head
Who shed light on uncut dolmen?
Who announces the ages of the moon?
Who shows the place where the sun sleeps?
If Not I
