“Edge of the Sea” by Marlin Ray

Soft dust wraps us in its rough embrace,
sea salt air dense with water.
Sunrise sea change
embraces the blue
dirt gives from the earth
soft kelp sleeve
and urchin wrap.
crayfish covering
and grey waves.
For these I sing my song.
Seaweed circus
of youthful shouts
bottomless marine world
of chance and glee.
The quiet line of breaking ocean,
for these I sing my song.
Hills slide to the edge of the sea
always fitting perfectly.
Everywhere the colors shout and twist
making joy and rain.
for these we sing our song.

“Build Me A Cottage” by Fernando Pessoa

Build me a cottage deep
In a forest, a simple, silent home,
Like a breath in a sleep,
Where all wish may be never to roam
And a pleasure all smallness may keep.

        A palace high then build,
With confusion of lights and of rooms,
        A strange sense to yield,
Whither my desire from the cottage’s glooms
May go, to return, unfulfilled.

        Then dig me a grave,
That what cottage nor palace can give
        I at length may have,
That the weariness of all ways to live
May cease like the last of a wave.

“Horizonte” by Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935)

Oh ocean preceding us, your fears
Had coral and beaches and forests to them.
Were the night and fog unveiled,
The past’s storms and mystery,
The Afar would blossom, and the starlit South
Shine resplendent on the ship of initiation.

Austere line of the distant coast
Upon the ship’s approach, the slope of the land rises
In trees with nothing
Far about them;
Closer by, the earth opens up in sounds and colours

And upon landing there are birds and flowers
Where from afar there was only an abstract line.
The dream is to see the invisibile forms
Of imprecise distances, and, with sensitive
Movements of hope and will,
To seek out in the cold line of the horizon
The tree, the beach, the flower, the bird, the fountain
The much-deserved caresses of Truth.

“Serenity” by Edward Rowland Sills

Brook,
Be still,—be still!
Midnight’s arch is broken
In thy ceaseless ripples.
Dark and cold below them
Runs the troubled water,—
Only on its bosom,
Shimmering and trembling,
Doth the glinted star-shine
                  Sparkle and cease.

                  Life,
Be still,—be still!
Boundless truth is shattered
On thy hurrying current.
Rest, with face uplifted,
Calm, serenely quiet;
Drink the deathless beauty—
Thrills of love and wonder
Sinking, shining, star-like;
Till the mirrored heaven
Hollow down within thee
Holy deeps unfathomed,
Where far thoughts go floating,
And low voices wander
              Whispering peace.

It always starts with a spark
An idea, a foolish thought,
A path not fully walked.
When many sparks unite
We set a fire to explore the night.

“A project made in 4 months recorded in different locations of the geography of Navarra.
I wanted to reflect different environments changing the color tone in each scene, after making the white balance, thus generating a very different environment, dark, inospito and inert, heavenly, ….. trying to find the beauty of still life. A trip through different spaces through doors trying to awaken sensations. A walk of the soul.”

Sonja Cinematic Poem Documentary Short Film Directed By Maroš Milčík (2018)

“Sonja is a poetic portrayal of the story of the sightless artist Sona Zeliskova, who despite adverse fate found her life journey in art and ceramics

The film experiments with audio-visual components to recount Sona’s unique story. Combining a documentary, narrative and poetic approach, this short film attempts to depict the real-life story via poetic language.

We used special infrared technology, in order to achieve a surrealistic black-and-white visual. The unique picture thus emerged purely in-camera without the use of post-production.

Sonja Cinematic Poem Documentary Short Film Directed By Maroš Milčík (2018)

Sona carries a one-of-a-kind story of a lifetime struggle, overcoming obstacles while flourishing her love for art. At the age of 13, she was diagnosed with diabetes. At 26, right by the birth of her son, she completely lost her sight. At age of 39, nevertheless, she has found her life purpose and passion for ceramics and became a successful artist. Today, Sonia runs ceramics courses, lectures at conferences and has become a life inspiration for many others.”

5Point Adventure Film Festival 2018 Cinematic Poem Short Film Trailer

Narrated by: Michael Kennedy

“The annual 5Point Film Festival trailer reminds us to reach for our highest ideals and live our best adventure. This year is no different.

In 2007, Julie Kennedy founded the 5Point Film Festival. In 2012, her husband Michael Kennedy, one of America’s most legendary alpinists wrote an open ‘Letter to My [his] Son’ that was published in The Alpinist Magazine. They were poignant and heartfelt words from a father to his son discussing life, passion and direction. After losing their son this year, it seemed like an appropriate homage to revisit and repurpose these words for the larger community. The letter reminds us to live our own individual adventures, passions, lives and to always try our best to reach for the highest ideals and embody the 5points: purpose, respect, commitment, humility, balance.”

5Point Adventure Film Festival 2018 Cinematic Poem Short Film Trailer

Excerpts from “Letter To My Son” by Michael Kennedy

“How can I express all the thoughts and emotions that swirl in my head, Hayden, when you are halfway around the world on a big route? I remember my own days up high, the feeling of lightness as the earth drops away, the moments of pure grace when nothing matters except the next move—setting a foot just so, feeling the solid thunk of an axe, the calmness of my heart and mind. Everything I needed was right before me.

I know that’s what you’re searching for, but it’s not always what you get. For I also recall the deafening fatigue of climbing too many hours without stopping, the dry throat and the aching belly, the paralyzing fear of a long runout. The bad anchors. The close calls with storms, rockfall and avalanches. The anxiety of being days away from safety, wondering whether the next pitch will go, searching for a bivy site or just a place to sit for a few hours, knowing that the only way out is over the summit and down an unfamiliar ridge.

You’ve gotten all that and more since you left home.”

“Where Are The African Gods”: A Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed By Rodney Passé (2018)

“Where Are The African Gods” is a Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed By Rodney Passé.

Produced and Directed by: Rodney Passé

Filmed by: Andrew Trost and Shawn Peters
Co-Produced by: Danielle Redman

Where Are The African Gods Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed By Rodney Passé 2018

Words and Narration by: Abbey Lincoln

“Poetic License: Where are the African Gods?
Lyricist Abbey Lincoln’s words are brought to life in this meditative portrait of black masculinity.

A moving recording of the late writer and renowned jazz singer Abbey Lincoln is captured in this new film from Brooklyn-born director Rodney Passé, who has previously worked with powerhouse music video director Kahlil Joseph. Reading from her own works, Lincoln’s voice sets the tone for a film that explores the African American experience through fathers and their sons.”

“The film movingly captures moments from the perspective of African American men and their sons”
“Abbey Lincoln’s poem is a chilling reminder of black society’s struggle with self-image,” explains Passé. Speaking of the film’s experiment with spoken-word and music, the filmmaker continues: “The arrangement is heart-felt, capturing moments from the perspective of African American men and their sons, while celebrating the essence of black culture and honouring its significance in today’s society.”

Where Are The African Gods Cinematic Poem Short Film Directed By Rodney Passé 2018

Where are the African Gods?
Did they leave us on our
Journey over here?

Where are the African Gods?
Will we know them
When they suddenly appear?
The ones dismissed with voodoo,
Rock and roll, and all that jazz.
And jungle mumbo jumbo.
And razzmatazz.

Where are the African Gods
Who live within the skin,
Without the skin,
And in the skin again.

Where are the African Gods?
Do they hide among the shadows
While we stumble on the way?
Or did they go with heaven
To prepare another day?
Where are the African Gods
Who’ll save us from this misery and shame?

Where are the African Gods?
Where are the African Gods?
Where are the African Gods?
Where are the African Gods?

Will we find them while
We pray in Jesus’ name?
Where are the African Gods
Who live, and set us free?
We are the African Gods.
You and Me.

Ethos Cinematic Poem Aerial Short Film Directed by Jay Worsley 2018

Excerpts from “True Love” by Robert Penn Warren

In silence the heart raves. It utters words
Meaningless, that never had
A meaning. I was ten, skinny, red-headed,

Freckled. In a big black Buick,
Driven by a big grown boy, with a necktie, she sat
In front of the drugstore, sipping something

Through a straw. There is nothing like
Beauty. It stops your heart. It
Thickens your blood. It stops your breath…

Ethos Cinematic Poem Aerial Short Film Directed by Jay Worsley 2018

Excerpts from “Song” by Allen Ginsberg

The weight of the world
is love.
Under the burden
of solitude,
under the burden
of dissatisfaction

the weight,
the weight we carry
is love.

Who can deny?
In dreams
it touches
the body,
in thought
constructs
a miracle,
in imagination
anguishes
till born
in human–
looks out of the heart
burning with purity–
for the burden of life
is love,
